I talked about personal projects a while ago and how useful they can be to help us develop our style and/or try new things. Alice in Wonderland amazed me as a child (it’s probably my favourite Disney movie) and when I was growing up I fell in love with the books as well; maybe that’s why it was such a challenge for me: trying to escape the influence from John Tenniel’s illustrations or Mary Blair’s iconic movie designs was almost impossible.

I started the project around two years ago. Even though I knew I didn’t want to do more than three or four illustrations, I kept getting stuck over and over again. I know that admitting that this is not my best project may be against the non-written rules of selling your own art on the Internet, but I think I learnt a valuable lesson here: spending too much time on a project often leads to overthinking it, and the artwork can lose its freshness along the way. It’s not always the case, of course, and sometimes leaving a project and come back after a while can be for the best, but it’s a good thing to ask yourself about the reasons why you are taking that long.

The project took an interesting turn, though. I do feel that I explored new things like the monochromatic blue style or the slightly more kid-friendly look and, overall, I’m quite happy with the final art. Alice itself was going to be more present as in the first sketches and the lovely Verónica (my friend Jacqueline’s sister) was the model: a black-haired, crooked smiled, free-spirited girl that looked more like the Alice I had always imagined.
