Earlier this year, I got the great news that I would be joining Shortbox Digital Comic Fair, an event where selected comic artists debut new comics each year. I was excited and honoured but obviously, that also meant that I had to start working ASAP. After much thought, I decided to adapt a short story I wrote in September 2019, Meteors, about a group of friends who get together to watch a meteor shower.
A principio de este año recibí la estupenda noticia de que había sido seleccionada para el Shortbox Digital Comic Fair, un evento donde varios artistas presentan cómics nuevos hechos para la ocasión. Estaba emocionadísima pero claro, esto también significaba que me tenía que poner manos a la obra cuanto antes. Después de darle muchas vueltas, decidí adaptar una historia corta que escribí en Septiembre de 2019, Meteoritos, sobre un grupo de amigos que quedan para ver una lluvia de estrellas.
This is a tricky project for many reasons. First, the story is something in between sci-fi and magical realism, so I won’t be able to use cool monsters or flashy panels to compensate for plot holes or deficient writing… and believe me, this is something artists do a lot. Also, this story is going to be around 20 pages, which is already 10 more than my longest story to date. Writing a longer story had required more patience, trusting the process, letting the story slow down sometimes and tying up loose ends in a different way.
Es un proyecto complicado por muchas razones. Primero, la historia está situada en algún punto entre la ciencia ficción y el realismo mágico, así que no voy a poder usar monstruos y viñetas impresionantes para compensar los agujeros de guión o cualquier problema de narrativa que pueda haber… y creedme, que esto es algo que hacemos mucho los dibujantes. Además, esta historia tendrá alrededor de 20 páginas, que son 10 más que mi historia más larga hasta la fecha. Una historia más larga requiere más paciencia, confiar en el proceso de edición, dejar que la historia cambie de ritmo a veces y unir los cabos sueltos de una manera distinta.
In the last few years, I’ve been searching more within myself for inspiration and this short story wasn’t an exception. It’s about growing up, becoming somebody else and what you lose along the way. About being unable to connect with that younger self, as if they were somebody else and now they are gone forever and nobody noticed. I was that kid who would go every year to see the Perseids and I was also the kid having strange premonitions (which I understand now, it was anxiety building up inside my young mind, in a time when nobody was talking about it). There is a lot of me in this story and it’s scary and exciting.
En los últimos años, he intentado buscar mi inspiración en mi propia experiencia y esta historia es un buen ejemplo. Trata sobre crecer, convertirte en otra persona y lo que perdemos por el camino. Sobre lo imposible que es conectar con ese “yo” del pasado, como si fuera otra persona que desapareció y nadie notó nada. Yo era quien iba todos los años a ver las perseidas y era también la que tenía premoniciones extrañas (ahora entiendo que no eran más que el producto de una ansiedad que iba creciendo dentro de mí en una época en la que nadie hablaba de estas cosas). Hay mucho de mí misma en esta historia y es emocionante y terrorífico a la vez.
That short story was the main obvious influence on the comic, but other pieces of fiction I found afterwards encouraged me to make certain decisions and be more subtle. Picnic at hanging rock is a novel and a stunning movie, full of mystery and beautiful images, which gave me the validation I needed not to “satisfy” the reader. Borja Gonzalez’s and Laura Perez’s comics are also a great example to embrace the weird and unexplained. Looking back, maybe I wish I had been braver about my story, but they will be my inspiration to take more risks in the future.
El relato es la influencia más obvia en el cómic, pero otras piezas de ficción con las que me topé más tarde me animaron a tomar ciertas decisiones y ser más sutil. Picnic at Hanging rock es una novela y una película increíble, llena de misterio y de una fotografía preciosa, que me dio la validación que necesitaba para no “satisfacer” al lector. Los cómics de Laura Pérez y de Borja González son otro gran ejemplo para abrazar lo extraño e inexplicable. Si echo la vista atrás, quizás me gustaría haber sido más valiente con mi historia, pero me servirán de inspiración para tomar más riesgos en el futuro.
